Garryowen FC Notes we 14th October 2007

Our seniors travel to the unique setting of the RDS on Saturday where they play Lansdowne at 2.30 in one of the ties of the 2nd round of the AIB Cup. Lansdowne are a big strong side and no doubt will be anxious to prise our hands off the trophy. The recent AIL meetings between the sides have all been close run affairs and we will have to hit the ground running on Saturday to come home with the spoils. The Gleeson League continued last weekend when our 3rdXV made the short trip to Fitzgerald Park. Thomond were very much in control in the opening half but against the odds our lads fought back well in the second half and were only four points adrift (31-35) at the finish. Paul Earley scored two tries when sprung from the bench. Eugene Hanrahan, Charlie Colling and Diarmuid Waters also touched down. The latter added the extra to three of our scores. They face a big test in Dooradoyle at 3.00 on Saturday when Shannon provide the opposition. Our 2nd XV, fresh from a 45-5 win away to Galwegians, can expect much sterner opposition from Bruff  in Kilballyowen on Sunday at 3.00. This is our first outing in the NM Seconds League and the game should be well worth the trip. The U20’s had a hard fought 20-17 in a friendly at the Canal Bank last Saturday. Hooker Kevin Buckley scored two tries and Colm Downes added the conversions and kicked to penalties. Meanwhile on the under age front, our U13’s found Shannon too strong and went down 12-0 in the NML at Coonagh on Sunday. The U14’s played a 24-24 draw in a friendly also at Coonagh, while the U18’s competed in an excellently run Yelverton Cup. Members please note the Ruck and Roll Club continues in the clubhouse on Friday nights. It’s an ‘80’s themed weekly fundraiser and the opening night was well enjoyed by members and local residents
