Young Munster 28 Garryowen 3
Tom Clifford park saw two differing styles of rugby teams take on each other as Garryowen played Young Munster in the U18 league. Whereas at the start the slippery underfoot conditions made crisp ball handling difficult the deluge in the course of the game handed the advantage to the pack play and it was there Young Munster proved stronger. Both the conditions and strong defensive lineout play caused difficulties for Garryowen but in the end it was the power of Young Munsters rolling maul that did the most damage. They managed to set up a platform through the rolling maul to score their five tries and with one penalty their end score was 28 points. Garryowen provided stern resistance throughout. Their defence has come on a great deal and in broken play they looked the better side. The conditions fettered the backs ability to cut loose. Flashes of brilliance was seen from Robin Healy on the counter making about sixty yards cutting through the Munsters defence. Also Mike O Shea for his try showed brilliant footwork and no small measure of determination to make the line break and cross the line. Lorcan Lynch starting at full back enjoyed stepping closer to the action and the rougher side of life before taking up the full back berth following, our other scorer, James McGarry’s injury. Garryowen welcomed back Alan Kennedy and Tagdh Casey who both had a fine games. In all with better conditions it was a game that Garryowen could have won. Huge improvement has been made in the defence and if some effective work on defending rolling mauls could be done they would have little reason to fear any side. End result a win for Young Munster 28 – 3.
