Garryowen FC Notes w.e. 24 th February 2008

Our Seniors moved up to 3rd in the table and bang in contention for a semi final spot following their comprehensive 38-5 win over Greystones at a cool but sunny Dr. Hickey Park last Saturday. First half tries from Mark Melbourne and Kieran Lewis and two penalties and a conversion from Conor Kilroy more or less settled the game. With an 18-0 half team lead and the home team playing catch up rugby, it was inevitable we would add to our tally. Keith Earls and replacements Willie Staunton and Cillian O’Boyle all added tries for a valuable bonus point. Our next game is away to Lansdowne on 1 st March. To travel to Kilballyowen and beat Bruff is never an easy task. Add in the little detail of a semi final and you know it will be especially tough. So “hats off” to Niall Wixted’s charges who did just that last Saturday and qualified for the final on a 23-3 scoreline. It was an excellent performance from a hard working squad. Eugene Hanrahan, Charlie Colling and Dave McInerney were the try scorers. Diarmuid Waters kicked two penalties and also landed a conversion. Next up is a short trip to play Old Crescent in the McInerney Cup in Rosbrien on Saturday at 2.30. The U20’s had a useful workout against Sundays Well and in a tight enough game they just edged home 24-22. Still four tries was a nice little haul as Ian Whelan, Cian Leahy (2) and Eoin Finn all crossed the whitewash. Mike O’Shea kicked two conversions to complete the scoring. Thomond provide the opposition in a friendly this Saturday in Dooradoyle at 2.30. Tom Clifford Park on Sunday at 2.30 is the venue for the NM2L game v Young Munster. Under Age is beginning to gather pace at this time of year. Both our U16’s (lost 8-5 to Shannon in Coonagh) and U13’s (beaten 22-20 in last minute at Dooradoyle) suffered narrow league defeats. The U18’s had a useful 17-5 win over Ennis in a friendly. Games scheduled for this weekend include U18’s at home to Shannon, U16’s play Young Munster in Derryknockane and U14’s are away to Old Crescent. All three games kick off at 11.30, while the U13’s have a 12 noon kick off v Ennis at Lees Road.
