Garryowen FC Notes we 29th October 2006

As expected, Ballymena proved a real tough nut to crack at a wet and windy Dooradoyle last Saturday. Our last minute win, courtesy of Conor Kilroy’s fourth penalty of the afternoon, was achieved only after a ding-dong battle throughout. Leading 6-0 at the break, we had to withstand considerable pressure from the Northerners as the conditions deteriorated. Our midfield defence and covering of our back-row again proved decisive. After conceding a converted try, we rallied again to edge 9-7 in front. It did, however, look all-over when an excellent drop goal from the visitors’ out-half crept over the bar. The probability of a home defeat spurred our pack on and following an indiscretion in our opponents 22, our No.15 drilled the resultant penalty over the bar to maintain our unbeaten run. On Saturday we play St. Mary’s College in Templeville Road and no doubt this game will be close, as the Shay Deering Trophy will also be up for grabs. Our U20’s went down narrowly 6-3 to Young Munster in the AIL. Despite dominating the set pieces for long periods, we were unable to break through a resolute defence. The game was tied at 3-3, until a late penalty sealed the points for the visitors. A trip to Galwegians on Saturday is next on the list and the players and coaches will be hoping for a more favourable result. Our Gleeson League run continued when we traveled to Annacotty and emerged victorious 14-3. Captain Mark Hanrahan led by example and it was his try which proved decisive. Fergus Sheehan was again in kicking form when landing 3 penalties. In under age, the weather caused the postponement of a couple of games but the U13’s beat Richmond 36-10 and the U16’s had a big 57-0 win over an under-strength Thomond side. On Sunday, our U13’s (NML) and U14’s (friendly) are away to Shannon in Coonagh.
