Garryowen FC Notes
w.e 20th April 2008
UCD provide the opposition in our last AIB league game on
Saturday in Dooradoyle at 2.30. The students had been going well in the title
race but some recent results has seen them drop outside the top four. A
talented side with plenty of pace out wide, they pushed us all the way on their
previous visit and in fact took the full points in last year’s encounter at
Belfield. Form would suggest a home win, but Dara O’Sullivan will no doubt
ensure there is no complacency on our part. We would remind our supporters that
the recently- introduced post-match format of “meet the players” and
presentation of the man of the match award will be at 4.45. Niall Wixted was a
happy man last Sunday as his 3rd XV qualified for the Munster J2
final. Their 13-5 win over a gallant Ballincollig side was achieved through
their superiority up front and control at half back. Mark O’Neill scored a try and
the ever reliable Diarmuid Waters kicked the conversion and landed two
penalties. The West Cork side had a
consolation try at the end. On Saturday it’s back to the Webb Cup semi final
when they play Richmond
in the Canal Bank at 2.30. The U20’s continued their preparation for the NM U20
cup when they beat Naas 36-26 in a friendly at Dooradoyle. Last week our U14’s
captured the NM league title and our U15’s advanced in the NM Cup following a
fine 21-8 win over Ennis. Fixtures for this Sunday include U14 Cup v Young
Munster 11.30 in Derryknockane, U16 Friendly v Kilrush at 11.30 in Kilrush and
U15 7-A-Side in Greenfields at 10.30.On the fund-raising side of things, Gerry
O’Mahony and Kenny Smith held a successful club golf outing in Castletroy and
on Saturday night Paul Cunningham will be at the traps at 8.00 for our annual
Greyhound Meeting in Limerick Greyhound Stadium at the Markets Field. Both
these events are in support of our Youth Development programme. We would ask
all our members to support this meeting and with the fine weather finally
arriving, this should be a great night out. Congratulations to Shannon RFC
players and officials following their AIB Cup win in Athlone. It was close, it
was tough but their defence was up to the task. Well done to all concerned and
no doubt both our sides will have a say in the destination of the AIB League,
the semi finals of which take place on Saturday 3rd May.
