Garryowen FC Notes
w.e. 02 March 2008
The AIB League resumes on Saturday when we face Lansdowne in
the RDS at 2.30. Our last visit to this venue proved a winning one but with the
scramble for points hotting up, we are under no illusions that a full-throttle
performance is required if we are to come home with the spoils. In the NM2
league last Sunday, Young Munster prevailed in a tight game on a 25-20 score-line
at Tom Clifford Park. Anthony Gahan and Ben Rowley were our try scorers. Willie
Staunton converted both and also kicked two penalties. The league continues on
Sunday when we play Shannon in Dooradoyle at
3.00. Following their excellent Gleeson league semi final win the previous
week, our 3rd XV had to give best to Old Crescent in the McInerney Cup at
Rosbrien. No doubt the players will be a bit disappointed but a number of
errors proved their undoing. Despite tries from Mark Hanrahan and Damian
Carroll, they could not get the vital score and the Crescent prevailed 14-10 in
the end. The Webb Cup kicks off on Saturday when we play Young Munster in Tom
Clifford Park at 2.30. US
visitors St. Bonaventure are visitors to Dooradoyle on Saturday where they play
our U20’s in a friendly at 12 noon. In an entertaining friendly last week our
boys were well in contention when trailing Shannon
10-7 in the second half. However some poor missed tackles were punished by the
Coonagh side who went on to record a deserved 22-7 win. Scrum half Jeff Ruttle got our sole try which
Ciaran Collins converted. The under age season is in full swing at the moment.
Last Sunday our U13’s travelled to Lees
Road and beat Ennis 39-5 but our U14’s went down
15-7 to Old Crescent
in Rosbrien. David Carroll scored a try and Andrew O’Byrne added the extras in
response to 3 unconverted tries from the home side. Young Munster proved too
strong for our U16’s at Derryknockane and ran out 25-12 winners, while a
depleted U18 team proved no match for Shannon eventually
losing 40-5. Fixtures for this coming Sunday include an U18 friendly away to UL
Bohemians and U16 league game against the same opposition in Dooradoyle. Both
games kick off at 11.30. Our U8’s will be in St. Marys and our U9’s in Fitzgerald Park at 10.30
