Garryowen FC Notes w.e. 09th March 2008

It was close, but our 11-5 win over Lansdowne at a blustery RDS last Saturday maintains our drive towards the semi finals. Conor Kilroy’s two penalties and an excellent try from left wing Keith Earls were just about enough to repel a determined effort from the Dubliners. Indeed when they cut our 6-0 lead with an overlap try just before half time, it seemed that our unbeaten league run on the road this season might be in danger. A fantastic second half performance from our pack most notably Neville, Malone and Kavanagh in the back row and the powerful Damien Varley in the No 2 position seized back the initiative. Defence was turned into attack and quick hands created the opening for Earls to get the vital score. Our campaign finishes off with  an away game v Galwegians on 22nd March, followed by two home games on 29th March v Old Belvedere and UCD on 19th April. On Sunday our 3rdXV contest the Gleeson League Final in Tom Clifford Park at 3.00. Best of  luck to Niall, Richard, capt Shane and all the players. The team had an easy 55-0 win over an albeit weakened Young Munster team in the first round of the Webb Cup in Tom Clifford Park last Saturday. Despite playing well for long periods of time, our 2nd XV had to give best to a strong Shannon team in the NM2L eventually going down 29-0. The club would like to wish Martin Joyce a speedy recovery from an injury he picked up during the course of the game. The U20’s entertained US team, St. Bonaventure and ran out 68-12 winners. They have a provisional NM Cup game v Newcastlewest at 11.30 in Abbeyfeale. TBC at time of going to press. UL Bohemians got the better of our U16’s in the NML on a 20-10 score-line at Annacotty and the Robins also had a 23-14 win over our U18’s in a friendly at Dooradoyle
