Garryowen FC Notes w.e. 19th November 2006.

Last weekend was relatively quiet on the playing front. Our Annual Race Day in Greenmount on Sunday proved a fantastic occasion for the club. We had a large turnout and the efforts of Charlie O’Hurley and Sean Canny are greatly appreciated by the club. Their drive and commitment are shining examples to us all. Our thanks to the Race Sponsors: Corporate Cleaning Services, OBI Development Advisors, Arramount Furniture, European Properties, Martinstown Stud and Souths Bar. The proprietor of the latter, Dave Hickey, had a great day and in addition to providing the troops with sandwiches and light ale, his daughter Libby bagged the Best Dressed Lady Award. A special word of thanks to Angus Houston, Racecourse Manager, for his assistance and professionalism in the lead up to and during the course of the day. This Saturday we make the short trip to Tom Clifford Park to play Nenagh in the Munster Senior Cup semi-final. We can expect no favours from the North Tipperary side when the game kicks off at 2.30. Our next home AIL game is on Saturday 2nd December v Belfast Harlequins. It has proved a roller coaster season so far for our U20’s, who lost nothing in their 15-6 defeat to UCC in Dooradoyle last Saturday. This new team is slowly getting there and will give a good account of themselves as the season progresses. Our junior team played an 18-18 draw with UCC in a friendly at Dooradyle. Niall O’Driscoll, Jamie Carroll and Declan Lavery were the try scorers and Alan McNamara kicked a penalty. On Sunday they play Dolphin in the MSL at Dooradoyle at the earlier kick off time of 1.30 to facilitate viewing of the Ireland v Australia game. Our thirds have a home friendly v Young Munster at 12.30 on Saturday. Last Saturday we played St. Mary’s in a friendly at Grove Island. Again hats off to the club for their excellent clubhouse and facilities. It was a lively game with Mike Kennedy, Peter O’Shea and Ger Somers touching down. Fergus Sheahan added the extra points to two in our 19-5 win. The club would like to extend their condolences to Joe O’Connor and his family on the death of his beloved wife Esther last week.
