Garryowen FC Notes w.e 10th September 2006

The Charity Cup provided our senior team with their first competitive game of the season when they entertained Old Crescent in perfect conditions at Dooradoyle last Saturday.  The balmy weather and the fast ground made for good running rugby with both sides keeping the ball in hand as much as possible. Paul Cunningham had the opportunity to run his eyes over a number of new faces in the squad with the close season arrival of Eoghan Hickey and Argentinian, Federico Quaglia. Both seemed to settle in nicely at full back and inside centre respectively and with our pack gradually assuming superiority up front, the openings began to appear. The former atoned for an earlier miss when he found the range with a penalty and John Staunton provided the finishing touch to a well worked forward try in response to a penalty from the visitors. Half time score 8-3. The Rosbrien side contributed their fair share of enterprising rugby and our defence had to be on their toes to keep our line intact. Midway through the second half Kevin Hartigan burst through the flat defensive cover and his strength carried him all the way to the line for a fine individual try. Eoghan Hickey’s second conversion of the day stretched our lead to17-3 and while we conceded a try in the closing stages of the game, the result was never really in doubt. Final scoreline 17-8 and we now play UL Bohs in the semi final on Saturday 10th at 2.30 in Dooradoyle. Last Sunday, our Junior XV made the short trip down the road and accounted for a rather poor Old Crescent side; running out easy winners in a one sided game. Their next game is in the Tony Colbert Memorial Trophy v St. Mary’s in Pa Healy’s Field at 6.15 on Wednesday 13th Sept. This annual fixture commemorates our former President who gave so much to the game both on and off the field.

Our Under Age teams continue to prosper and it is always heartening to see juvenile stars of the past moving through to the senior squad. Our Academy goes from strength to strength and the additional coaching and conditioning over the summer months has been evident at training. There is one fixture this Sunday when our U15’s play St. Mary’s in the NM league away at 11.15. Parents please note the following training times for the respective age groups: U18 Friday 7.00 p.m., U6 to U12, Sunday 10.00 a.m., U13 to U16, Sunday 11.00 a.m.

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Noel O’Dwyer who has sadly passed on. Noel won a Junior Cup Medal with our club in 1955 and was a life-long supporter.
